[과학] 왜 고양이들은 대소변을 스스로 청소할까?

나는 실제로 주변의 고양이들이 자신의 대소변을 스스로 청소하는걸 종종 목격했다. 정말 대단하지않은가

먼저, 고양이들이 이런 행동을 하는 이유가 그저 고양이들이 깨끗한 동물이기 때문이라고 생각했다.

즉, 위생적으로 높은 수준을 가지고 있기때문에 자신의 대소변을 청소하는거라고 지례짐작했던 것이다. 
(First, I thought it happens because they, cats, are born to be ‘a clean animal’, more specifically, protecting themselves out of potential hygine-problems.)

 

하지만, 리서치 결과, 내가 완전히 틀렸음을 알았다..
(However, after research, I found it wrong.)

그렇다면 왜 고양이들은 자신이 대소변을 본 후 스스로 청소를 하는걸까?
(So, why do cats burry or cover their poop?)

 

이유는 이렇다. 라이브 사이언스의 저널리스트 레미 멜리나에 의하면, 고양이들의 이런 행동은 잠재적 포식자들로부터 위치를 발각하기 어렵게 하기 위한 일종의 '생존 본능'인것이다.

 

그러면 반대로 같은 '고양잇과'의 호랑이나 사자도 이런 행동을 할까?

대답은 No! 왜냐하면 호랑이나 사자와 같은 상위 포식자들은 자신의 생존을 위협하는 포식자가 많지 않기때문이다.

 

(According to Remy Melina, a journalist from LIve Science, cats burry their poop because they do not want their potential predators know their existance and where they stayed. Similarly but differently, rions do not really cover up thier poop. Why? Because lions do not have as many predators as these little kitty!)

 

잠깐, 또하나! 도시에 살고있는 반려묘들은 어떻게 설명할 수 있을까?

인간과 함께 집에 살고 있는 고양이들은 포식자로부터의 위험이 없지만 여전히 그러한 '본능'이 남아있기 때문에 청소를 한다고한다.
(Well, would home make cats feel unsafe from potential predators? this is exactily same question I had while researching it. The answer is, but, still yes. These little cats still take this action in case of threats from predators.)
